Ontario Auto Repair Shop FAQs

How often should I have my oil changed?

Generally, today’s cars require an oil change every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. But your first authority is your owner’s manual. Check the manual to determine what is right for your make, model, and year. It will also recommend the type of oil to use.

Older cars need oil changes more frequently, so contact your Ontario Ramona Tire & Service Centers to discuss this with one of our ASE-certified mechanics. They can advise you on the proper frequency based on your car and your driving habits.

Which is best for my car: synthetic oil or conventional oil?

Follow the recommendation in your owner’s manual first. If your owner’s manual doesn’t specify one or the other, you can choose between synthetic or conventional oil based on the cost and performance. They both protect your engine, but keep in mind that synthetic oil protects your engine better. It also reduces the buildup of sludge and operates better under extreme conditions. It is more expensive to use synthetic oil but the benefits are worth the extra cost.

For cars with more than 75,000 on the odometer, switch to high mileage oil. It has special additives that protect against normal problems that happen to older engines.

If you’re unsure about the best choice for your vehicle, our technicians will be glad to assist you.

My check engine light came on. Now what?

Don’t ignore it. If the check engine light is on but not blinking, drive the car to our Ontario auto repair shop. An auto mechanic will perform a diagnostic test to identify the source of the problem. If the check engine light is flashing, we recommend that you not drive it and have it towed to our Ramona Ontario auto repair shop where it will be diagnosed. If repairs are indicated, we will provide a written estimate of required repairs for your approval.

My car is overheating; what do I do?

Generally, overheating is related to the antifreeze or cooling system in your car (or both). The problem may involve your fan, radiator, thermostat, water pumps, hoses, and/or coolant. It’s best to turn off your AC and pull into a nearby spot to let the car cool down. Don’t open the hood until the engine has cooled significantly.

Your engine should be protected at all costs from overheating. Call your towing service to take the car to the nearest car repair shop to prevent any further damage. It’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your engine.

What about all the fluids in the car? When do they need to be changed?

This is one of the easiest ways for you to protect your car from unnecessary repairs. Follow the recommendations in your owner’s manual. In general, these are the recommended schedules for fluid changes:

  • Coolant fluid: every 60,000 to 100,000 miles
  • Differential fluid: every 60,000 miles
  • Brake fluid: every 30,000 miles
  • Transmission fluid: every 60,000 miles
  • Power steering fluid: every 30,000 to 60,000 miles
  • Fuel Induction (GDI) service: every 30,000 miles

At Ramona, we’ll help you keep up with your fluid exchanges to maintain engine protection and performance.

How often should I replace my car battery?

Make sure you are having the battery checked each time you have an oil change. This will alert you to any possible problems before you are left stranded. Batteries are sold based on how long they are expected to last. Most batteries last between three and five years, depending on how you drive. Starting the car and then letting the alternator have enough time to recharge means that short trips can drain the battery faster than is normal. Terminals and cable can loosen, break, corrode, or calcify which will weaken the battery. Our auto shop experts will check your battery for these problems.

Are local auto repair shops cheaper than dealerships?

Are you new to the world of auto repair in Ontario, California? If so, you may think it’s wise to get car repair and maintenance services handled at the same dealership where you bought your car in the first place. But even though your dealership has brand recognition on its side, it almost certainly won’t be Ontario’s most affordable option for auto repair. Dealerships have a reputation for going overboard on their repair and maintenance costs, so it pays to seek out a local auto shop offering the same services at better rates.

Even if you aren’t focusing on your dealership’s name, you may have another reason for thinking it’s a good idea to get auto service there. Many Ontario residents are under the impression that if they get auto service outside of their dealership, their warranty will be void. But in the United States, dealers are legally required to maintain customers’ warranties regardless of where they get repair and maintenance work done. That means you can explore other auto service providers in Ontario—including Ramona Tire & Service Centers.

Once you’ve decided to leave your dealership behind and get car repair and maintenance taken care of elsewhere, you shouldn’t let your guard down immediately. Some independent Ontario auto shops are just as overpriced as dealerships in the area, so you’ll still need to do some research. Ramona Tire offers qualified service at reasonable prices, and you can save even more with our financing opportunities and digital coupons!

How do I choose a good mechanic?

When you need car repair service in or around Ontario, it only makes sense that you’d want to find the most qualified option available. After all, your mechanic will be responsible for your vehicle’s performance for years to come.

In some ways, online research has simplified this process. Today, getting a sense of an auto shop’s quality level is as easy as typing their name into a search engine. However, there are so many auto shops in Ontario that it can be hard to consider all of them closely. When you combine that fact with the mind-boggling amount of information available on the internet, the thought of choosing a local shop for auto service may feel far more imposing than it once did.

The simplest way to deal with this situation is to look at a shop’s most important qualifications. A great place to start is by checking the skill level of their mechanics—after all, these are the people who will go hands-on with your car. Ramona Tire only hires ASE-certified mechanics, meaning you’ll get the best possible workmanship, whether you need auto repair services or simple maintenance.

Can I ask a mechanic for a quote?

If you’re searching for a new Ontario auto shop, there are a few things you should be wary of. That certainly includes car repair shops that aren’t willing to provide quotes. After all, a quote can give you some idea of how much your service will cost before it happens. When you get a quote from a reputable car repair shop ahead of time, you’ll have a chance to commit to taking care of repairs or maintenance at your shop of choice or going elsewhere.

Ramona Tire is Ontario’s most trusted auto repair shop, so we’re proud to offer quotes to our valued customers. Simply fill out our online quote request form to get started. When you do, we’ll send you a cost estimate for the services you need before you know it!

What is basic maintenance for a car?

Of course, there are many different maintenance tasks you’ll need to keep up on over your vehicle’s lifespan. However, some of the most important jobs of this nature fit into a single category—that is, preventive auto maintenance. The tasks that fall under the preventive maintenance umbrella may not seem all that crucial, but they play an indispensable role in keeping your car on the road. In addition, they can lower your risk of needing significant repairs when your vehicle gets older.

Are you wondering what preventive auto maintenance tasks you might need? Here are some of the most common maintenance services Ramona Tire provides:

  • Oil change service. No matter where you drive in California, you can’t avoid your need for regular oil changes. It’s wise to get a professional oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles at a minimum. That way, your engine will stay lubricated and be able to perform at the top of its game. The good news is that oil changes are highly affordable (when they’re handled by a trusted garage like Ramona Tire, anyway).
  • Belt/hose checks. The very act of driving a vehicle puts stress on its components, and few car parts are subject to as much wear and tear as your belts and hoses. If these parts have stopped working as they should, let Ramona Tire’s mechanics inspect and replace them for you.
  • Spark plug replacement. Spark plugs have a relatively long lifespan for auto components—emphasis on “relatively.” Since these parts won’t last forever, we’d be happy to install new ones.
  • Fluid flushes. In addition to oil, your vehicle needs a few other fluids to do its job. When you bring your car in for preventive maintenance, we’ll check to ensure your fluid levels are good—and top off or replace these fluids as needed.
